These aren’t just names to call Jesus. They are reasons to seek him. They are an inventory of the arsenal of wisdom and power available to us through him.
“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us…He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
ISAIAH 9:6
Wonderful Counselor
The actions of Jesus show us how to live. The words of Jesus teach us how to live. His counsel is supernatural and perfect. Because of him, we have the knowledge of God’s mysteries and access to all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:2-3). We receive instruction that shows us which way to go, we’re surrounded with faithful love, and our hearts are filled with joy (Psalm 32:8-11).
He is our Mighty God
Jesus is the mightiest of warriors; the one who fights for us. He is Master of creation, Ruler of heaven and earth, and Savior of the world. Because of him, we are never alone and we are never defeated. When we pass through rushing waters, we will not be overcome. When we walk through fire, we will not be burned. We are precious to him, created for his glory, and we never need to feel afraid because he is with us (Isaiah 43:2-5).
Eternal Father
A father loves, protects, and sacrifices for his children, but eventually that love comes to an end here on earth. As our Eternal Father, we can trust that the love of Jesus never runs out. He loved us before we were born (Psalm 139:16). He cares for us as shepherds care for sheep; protecting, leading, and providing a satisfied life (John 10:9-10). And he chose to sacrifice himself so that we will not die but have eternal life (John 10:18, John 3:16).
He is our Prince of Peace
Sin destroys peace. It separates us from God, causing emotional pain and spiritual death. But Jesus is our Prince of Peace. His death and resurrection demolish the power of sin and give us the priceless gift of peace that surpasses all human understanding – even in the scariest storms (Philippians 4:7). Because of Jesus, we have power over the enemy and our hearts can overflow with hope (Luke 10:19, Romans 15:13).
